Integrative Seminar Week 4
This class involved the discussion of The Metamorphosis Chapter 2.This chapter shows how Gregor’s family tries to adapt to his new nature. One of the most significant developments of the chapter was the relationship between Gregor and his sister,Grete.Grete is the first one to help out Gregor’s daily needs, she brings him food and helps him adjust to his room after the transformation. The rest of his family, however, still seems hostile to the change and sometimes pretend like Gregor doesn’t exist, and when they do remember his absence, its mainly due to the income he brought in and how they could make up for it.
Two things I realized at this juncture, first that Gregor was clearly a self centered man, every dinner table conversation he heard ultimately looped back to him in his brain.Secondly, his father wasn’t as intimidating as Gregor made him out to be.He had turned into a weathered, lethargic man,but still acted as an authority figure in Gregor’s mind.
The class then unanimously picked out a few words which summarised the chapter:
- Change of appetite
- Dogmatic Person
- Confused Reactions
- Lack of Expression
- Feeling Caged
We then discussed what the words ‘anguish’ and ‘loneliness’ meant to us personally. Each person had a different view of the same words. For me,anguish what I feel when I’m frustrated about how sad I am.Loneliness almost reminds me of the word helpless. It is something one usually faces without a choice. It is being helpless about life due to lack of support.
I was then told to write 20 words which describe myself as a person. Here are the words I chose:
- Passive Aggressive
